We arrived at Homer Spit Alaska on 15 July 2025. Our drive from Kenai/Soldotna was 85 miles and once we got to Homer the views of water and mountains were beautiful. The Spit where we’d be staying looked like just a strip of land, which is what it actually is. We stayed at Homer Spit Campground for two weeks and those two weeks were the fastest of any time we’ve spent in Alaska. There was so much to do!
The day we arrived, we backtracked a little to attend a beach campfire/potluck in Ninilchik. A friend Steve had met in Seward told him about it. Before finding the spot on the beach, we checked out the Russian Orthodox Church in Ninilchik. We couldn’t go inside, but it had what we’ve come to know as “the look” with ornate dome on the roof and the cross with three lines across and the bottom on being slanted. Transfiguration of Our Lord Orthodox Church is situated on top of a hill with quite an overlook view of Cooks Inlet.
We got to the beach campfire and met nice people, even one from New Iberia Louisiana which is about 20 miles from where Anita grew up in Lafayette. Many of the attendees were native Alaskans and they had a gillnet set up to bring in sockeye salmon toward the end of the evening. Native Alaskans are allowed to fish that way, but anglers who are visiting like us can only fish with rods and reels. We left there around 8pm that night and with being in the land of the midnight sun we got home with the sun still high in the sky.

Two couples we’ve met on the road were in Homer when we arrived. Brent and Shannon whom we’d met last summer (2024) in Nova Scotia were in Homer as well as Jerry and Debbie whom we met in Seward Alaska a couple of stops before Homer (July 2025). We had run into Brent and Shannon in Valdez one evening when we went to the docks to see what the charter fishing boats brought in. Brent and Shannon are big into fishing. We had ice cream with them the second evening we were in Homer to hear their scoop on fishing in Homer. They had some good information that we put to use later in our stay. Earlier in the day, which was our fist full day in Homer, we had to do laundry. With being in a new town, we always feel a little overwhelmed with what to do first when there is so much to see and do.
On 16 July, we tried fishing in “the hole”. Steve put on his chest waders and Anita her hip boots and we fished for about 3 hours. We watched lots of fish being caught around us, but we didn’t catch any that first day of fishing. Steve lost one that he had hooked, but Anita didn’t even get a nibble. We also checked out the end of the Spit, which was just a few yards from our campsite.
We met up with Jerry and Debbie that afternoon around 3. We had ice cream with them and then walked around town for a while. We checked out what the Homer fishing boats were bringing in and then said our good byes since they were leaving the next day. If we don’t cross paths again in Alaska, they live in Ohio and we’ll stop by to see them if we pass through in our travels. That night we went to a nice Mexican dinner with Brent and Shannon.

On Friday (17th) we went on the guided hike with an intern (Gracie) at the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center (Islands and Ocean). Gracie took us about ¾ of a mile on the Beluga Slough Trail and then gave us the choice to walk back with her or continue down to the beach. We all continued to the beach. It was a cloudy day, but still nice to be outside.

Steve had been trying to get two seats on a halibut fishing charter since we arrived in Homer. They were all booked solid through the month of July. He had left his name in case there were any cancellations, but the chances of getting out there to fish for halibut were not looking good. Anita tried looking at one of the boats we saw at the dock which had brought in a good haul. The Joker had one seat for Monday the 21st on a 12- hour trip for halibut, ling cod and rockfish. Anita couldn’t see being in Homer Alaska, the “Halibut Fishing Capital of the World” and Steve not fishing for halibut, so she convinced him to take the seat on the Joker. On Friday the 18th Steve got a seat on The Joker with Alaska Ocean Pros for Monday the 21st.
Saturday (19th) we attended mass at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Homer at 5pm. It’s a small church with about half of the attendees at the mass being visitors like us. Steve connected with his friend, John from Seward who was in Homer for the weekend and made plans to get together with John on Sunday for a potluck It was good food and nice meeting John’s friends.

Sunday morning Steve went fishing with Brent and Shannon. They were leaving that day heading to Anchor Point, about 20 miles north of Homer. Steve caught 3 sockeye salmon and Brent and Shannon caught their limit of 6 salmon each. Anita opted to not fish since it was cold and windy.
That evening we went for a walk to see where the boat would be for Monday morning. While we were out walking we walked through the Salty Dawg Saloon, a historic building and bar on Homer Spit. The Salty Dawg Saloon actually was one of the first cabins built in Homer in 1897. We also checked out a couple of the sites that aren't convenient to see while driving.

Steve went on his fishing trip on Monday the 21st. He got his limits of 2 Halibut, 2 Ling Cod, 1 Yellow Eye Rockfish and 5 Black Rockfish. He was exhausted but had a big smile on his face when they came in. In Steve’s words: Not 5 minutes went by without having a fish hooked up. I safely returned at least another limit of fish. It was a rough 3 hr. to start fishing then a rough 4 hr. return to the dock.

Anita that morning, enjoyed sleeping in then a leisurely morning before going out. She had not checked out any of the shops along the strip so she walked to town and into each and every shop there is on the strip. Steve had walked to the boat that morning because it’s close and parking is scarce. So, after walking to all the shops and back home, then out again to walk to where we would meet the Seldovia Ferry and back home and out to check to see if the time for Steve’s boat to come was posted and back home then finally to meet Steve at the dock and home again, Anita had walked a little over 8 miles that day. It was a beautiful sunny day in the mid 60’s and it couldn’t have been better!
On Tuesday (22nd), Steve was a little sore from his fishing trip on Monday. He even had a couple of bruises where he held the rod. We stayed close to home most of the day, then after dinner went out for a bicycle ride. We only rode about 4 miles out, but it was really nice. The bicycle/walking path is great and goes for miles and miles. It lies between the road and the water, so it’s got a nice view most of the time. We had 8 miles of a ride and that was just right. We hadn’t ridden our bikes in months and we have a tendency to overdo it when we go for a ride after a long time of not riding.

Wednesday, 23 July, we took the ferry to Seldovia at 11am. We walked to the ferry which was a little over a mile from our campsite. The boat ride to Seldovia was 45 minutes and quite a bumpy ride with huge waves and wind. We made it on time but a couple of people looked a little green after that ride. According to the Internet, Seldovia boasts a rich history rooted in its indigenous peoples and their traditional homeland, followed by Russian and American influences. The area served as a meeting and trading place for various Native groups before becoming a significant Russian fur trading post. Later, it became a vital supply hub and transportation center during the gold rush and cannery boom. The 1964 Good Friday Earthquake significantly impacted the town, leading to rebuilding and a shift in its economic focus towards tourism. There is no road system connecting the town to other communities, so all travel to Seldovia is by airplane or boat. Current population is 248.
We walked around Seldovia and found the trail known to have salmon berries. We didn’t have to walk far on the trail for Steve to pick a sandwich bag full of berries! We were hungry for lunch around that time, so we headed to the Linwood Bar and Grill for lunch. We sat outside on the water and it was just beautiful. We had some time after lunch before we had to be back on the ferry at 4:15pm, so we went into the Seldovia Museum. It was free and pretty quick to walk through so we moseyed back to the ferry a little early and waited with all the other weary travelers. After walking home from the ferry terminal at the end of the day, we had walked 6.5 miles. We try to walk 2-3 miles every day, but especially for Anita, this week was great for lots of steps!

Steve was ready for a drive by Thursday. After about an hour of early morning beachcombing at low tide on Kachemak Bay, we drove out on the Sterling Highway to the “Welcome to Homer” sign to get a picture of it. We were towing and noticed it too late when we drove passed it on our way in 10 days prior. Then we drove to the Skyline View overlook with a stop at Effler Trail and Viewing Platform about a mile before the Overlook. After seeing Homer and the Spit from the Skyline View point, we continued on Skyline Drive to the All Saints of America Orthodox Church. There was a sign on the door with a number to call if we wanted a tour. We called and Christina was there in minutes. She was a wealth of information about the church and all the symbolisms in the icons on the walls and ceiling. We had a few questions and we were a little surprised about the similarities between the Roman Catholic Church and the Antiochian Orthodox Church. The Antiochian Orthodox Church, traces its origins to the early Christian community in Antioch, Syria founded by the apostles Peter and Paul.

We spent about an hour at the Orthodox Church and by then it was lunch time. We decided to head home, but made one more quick stop at the Carl E. Wynn Nature Center. We found out that Sunday morning there is a guided birding walk, so we planned to attend that.
Thursday evening we had Brent and Shannon over for halibut dinner. It was a fun time with lots of laughs about fishing and full time RV living.
Saturday (26th) we checked out the local Farmers Market. It was crazy busy, with lots of cars coming and going. We managed to find a parking place and we bought some salsa and a couple of veggies (one cucumber for $3 and a bag of lettuce left over from Wednesday for $3). We went to mass that evening and stopped at a local oyster market and to get a dozen oysters for Sunday. We tried fishing after dinner, but we had no luck. Sunday morning we were at the Carl E. Wynn Nature Center for the Bird Watching walk at 8:30. It was disappointing when no one showed up at 8:30. When the center opened at 9am, one of the guys offered to guide the 6 of us who were there since the regular person who leads the bird watching walks was on vacation and out of state. We went ahead and went with that guide and saw a few birds , but none close enough for pictures. We got a couple of pictures of flowers. Later Sunday afternoon we walked to two water taxi places to check on options to go for a hike at Kachemak Bay State Park. We opted to go with True North Adventures. After our walk, we went fishing (snagging) at "the hole". It was more Steve showing Anita how to cast for snagging. We stayed for two and a half hours, but didn't catch any fish.
On Monday, we enjoyed talking with our boat taxi captain , Shen, who is a native Alaskan and has had an interesting life. She has two young children and is actually friends with one of the grandchildren of the Kilchers who are on that TV Show about Alaska homesteading. She described where her parents live and how they found a loophole in the laws at that time to live where they do. Their house is the one that looks like a boat. We had taken a picture of it on our bike ride earlier in our stay.

We ended up walking over 8.5 miles on our last day in Homer Spit. We drive to Anchorage Alaska tomorrow. We'll spend two nights there, then on to Palmer for two nights and one night at Talkeetna before we reach Denali National Park, where we'll be for two weeks. In Anchorage or Palmer we'll need to re-supply. In Talkeetna, we will try to get a ride on the Hurricane Train.
We currently have a 3.5 cubic foot box freezer on order. It is due to come in to the UPS Store in Homer on 8 August. The 42 pounds of fish from Steve's deep sea fishing trip is in cold storage in Homer.
Great pictures and a great time is being had I see! Jill & David 😎
