Lassen Volcanic National Park

We arrived in Redding California on 11 November 2025 for two nights. That left us one day for seeing Lassen Volcanic National Park. On 12 November we drove 50 miles from our campground to Lassen Volcanic National Park. About 15 miles into the drive we saw a sign for the park, but with another sign "CLOSED" on it. We kept going since that was all we had planned for the day. To our surprise there was a park ranger at the gate when we arrived. She said she's only allowed to work 6 hours per week and is not allowed to take fees during the government shutdown. She also told us that the road is closed 10 miles into the park on Hwy 89 and that we could still drive in that far. About a half mile inside the park from the Northeast entrance there is a visitor center and museum, but both were closed. The restrooms were open and clean with flush toilets. We decided we would walk the Manzanita Lake trail after driving to the point in the park where the road was closed. The Manzanita Lake trail was an easy 1.8 mile trail and we had it all to ourselves. We enjoyed the walk and both said it was nice since we were driving yesterday and will be driving again tomorrow. We were actually lucky to see any of Lassen Volcanic National Park since it can close completely as early as 27 October. The park has already had snow at higher elevations.

We got back to our campground around 2 in the afternoon and started getting outdoor things put away before the expected rain that night. We were watching local weather closely as winds were forecast to gust up to 50mph and sustain 20mph. We bring our slide-outs in to protect the slide toppers if we feel the wind or know it's going to blow hard overnight. We took quite a few pictures at Lassen Volcanic National Park, thus this post. Tomorrow 13 November 2025, we'll drive 300 miles to Paicines California to see Pinnacles National Park and drive the Highway 1 Scenic Coastline.
