We arrived in Prince George BC on 9 September 2025. The weather was perfect with sunny skies and temps in the low 70’s. In the distance we could see a smoky haze from the wildfires around us. Our plan was to stay in Prince George for seven nights. The day we arrived we needed groceries so we took care of that in the big city. We even went out for Chinese food. You don’t realize how much you take for granted certain restaurants and stores till you go a whole summer without them. On our way to Prince George from Hazelton, our check engine light had come on in the truck. We got an appointment at a RAM dealer in Prince George for Thursday 11 September. It turned out that the check-engine light went out before we went to the appointment. Steve had replaced the air filter and that probably was the culprit. We’ve been on very dusty roads this whole Summer so the air filter was quite dirty and buggy. We got our oil changed and our windshield wiper fluid sensor cleaned during our maintenance appointment.
On Friday 12 September we had what we called a “Tree day”. We first visited Ancient Forest Provincial Park which is about 65 miles east of Prince George. On our way to Ancient Forest Provincial Park we saw two moose! It was in a field along the highway. Anita was not expecting to see a moose and thought it was a horse in the peripheral look she'd gotten. We stopped and it was indeed a female moose. Beyond her, back on top of a ridge, was another moose. Also a female, and both were moving away from us.
Next we went to Cottonwood Island Nature Park. Cottonwood Island Nature Park is known for the wood carvings in some of the trees and it’s right in Prince George. Elmer Gunderson, a local artist, started carving on tree bark about 20 years ago. It’s become a fun scavenger hunt of sorts to spot all the carvings. We saw a few, but probably not all of them. We were trying to do things before the forecasted rain. Between the two tree places we managed to walk 4.25 miles that day. That was the most exercise we got for most of our stay in Prince George. Anita was getting over a cold and with cool temps we stayed close to home.

Our pictures don't do justice for the magnitude of these trees. Many are 1,000 years old.

We decided to do the Railway and Forestry Museum on Saturday but it was closed for a wedding. We went to the local Farmers Market while waiting for the museum to open at 11am. The Farmers Market was nice. We went to mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Prince George BC at 5:30pm that day. We went to the Railway and Forestry Museum on Sunday. We spent a couple of hours walking around and checking out train cars. It was more interesting than Anita expected it to be. Before heading home, we fueled up the truck for our departure on Tuesday.

Sunday night we stayed up later than usual watching TV. Steve had seen that there was a chance to see Northern Lights where we were, so he went out to see before going to bed. It was almost midnight and he came back in to get me to go out. The Northern Lights were there! We had to walk to the back of the campground where there were fewer lights, but we could definitely see the glowing in the sky. We didn’t see the purple or green that some pictures show, but we were happy to see the dancing lights that we saw. Anita was especially happy, unable to go to sleep after seeing the lights. We are so very blessed!

Today, Monday 15 September 2025 we got laundry done and started drying out our outdoor rugs for packing them away for travel. Our plan is to drive over 300 miles tomorrow to Boston Bar still in BC. We want to spend about three nights there to see Hell’s Gate, a tourist destination to see Fraser River Canyon. There is a tram ride down into the canyon over the water and a pedestrian bridge over the water to walk out on to see the rushing waves. Next stop after Boston Bar will be the Continental US! We’re both ready for the creature comforts we appreciate like reliable Internet, brands we know in grocery stores and gallons of fuel instead of liters.
