We arrived in Fryeburg Maine on 12 June 2026 to attend the 2026 Escapade 14-19 June. It was 90 degrees with high humidity, very unlike what we know of Maine. It cooled down by Monday, with temps in the mid 70's. When we had signed up, we opted to arrive two days early and stay two days after most left. Since it was our first event of this kind, we thought it would be less stressful to allow ourselves extra time. We got there after 2pm on that Friday and they let us in even though we were supposed to have arrived before 2pm. Anita had seen that tidbit when signing up, but totally forgot about it the day we traveled. We had left pretty early from North Hudson NY, but the back roads to get to Fryeburg were very slow.
The Saturday (13th) night there was a "Sneak Peek Party" for the early arrivals. We sat with our neighbors from the Full Timers camping section. They were nice couple (Dan and Betsy) from New Hampshire. That night we met Kitty and John while standing in line for the meal. Everyone had prepaid for their meal, but the line for hotdogs and beans moved excruciatingly slow. We got to talking to Kitty and John and found out we had lived practically next door to each other in Easton Maryland! They lived in Easton Club East and we were in the development across the street, The Woods at Stoney Ridge. We found we had many things in common, like getting married the same year (2017) and of course being RV travelers. We're going to an SKP park this coming winter and it's the park they go to, so we plan to see them in Wauchula Florida this winter! We became fast friends and ended up hanging out with them a few times after we met them early on.
We went to mass in Fryeburg on Sunday at 10:30am. The church is St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. We actually had a Monsignor celebrating mass that day.

The Sunday evening was the Opening Ceremony at which they said they'd let us know how many rigs were at the rally at the end of the week. When Steve and I arrived on Friday, there were others pulling in beside us, but on Saturday lots more (mostly Class A motorhomes) were stacked in all around us. To look out any of our windows was to look at another camper. They were expecting 1000 campers for the escapade, but it turned out only 750 were actually present. I guess because we're accustomed to being alone most of the time, it felt like 1000 rigs and a million people.

The week took off with four to six seminars on the schedule every day, a Saco River Paddle on Tuesday for us, and volunteering to drive the transportation golf carts from 11am-3pm on Wednesday for us. We learned that another group had gone out on Monday for the Saco River Paddle. The Monday night, the entertainment was dueling pianos, which was a blast! We enjoyed singing along and watching the performers.

The Wednesday night entertainment was "Escapade's Got Talent" and we were impressed at the talent of all the performers from musicians and singers to story tellers to comedians.

On the last day of the Escapade, Steve had signed up to make a fish/clam chowder for the Chili & Chowder Showdown. He had a lot of fun with it and his chowder was enjoyed by many. Anita had gone to a seminar on traveling to Newfoundland and Labrador which started at 10:30am. The tasting of chilis and chowders started at 11:30am, but by the time Anita got to the showdown, Steve had no more chowder! As a matter of fact, only a couple of chilis were able to scrape a little spoonful for Anita to taste. That day (Thursday) was rainy and cool, so it brought lots of folks inside for some chili and chowder. Steve likes to cook and he's a good cook. Each person was judged on how many votes they got for their chili or chowder and on their decorations. Steve's decorations were weak. I don't know where some of the other people got their elaborate decorations, but suffice it to say Steve didn't win. It was still lots of fun!

Some people were going to Mount Washington NH for a cog railway trip up the mountain today (Friday). This was an excursion with Escapade. We want to go to Mount Washington too on our own, but today the winds there are up to 100mph and sustained 60mph. We'll watch the weather for tomorrow and we'll also go to mass in North Conway NH at Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church. They have a vigil mass at 4:30pm. The church in Fryeburg has no vigil mass. We're driving Sunday after we get our tanks professionally cleaned starting at 8am. There is a company called Kleen Tank here at the Escapade and they specialize in cleaning and flushing out RV holding tanks using a hydro-jetting technique. We've never had that done and it's a discounted price here at the rally, so we decided to do it. The process takes 1.5 to 2 hours, so we'll leave when they're done. We'll be driving to Sullivan Maine, about 200 miles.
