Concrete ships from WWII - Kiptopeke State Park - Cape Charles Virginia - 17 Sep 2026

As we make our way south to Florida, we’ve stopped in Virginia and North Carolina so far. We left Maryland on 16 September 2026 and drove to Cape Charles Virginia to stay at Kiptopeke State Park for three nights. It was still hot out and the gnats were abundant. It was not pleasant to just sit outside at the campsite. We did go for a couple of hikes while we were there and we saw the concrete ships out in the water. In WWII concrete ships were built during the steel shortage. Now nine concrete ships that were sunk in the 1940’s sit in the Chesapeake Bay.

From Virgina, we drove to Seven Springs North Carolina to stay at Seven Springs RV Park for four nights. The little “campground” has two sites with full hook ups. There was a picnic table and a fire ring if one wanted to be out in the heat, but we didn’t partake.

We attended mass at St. Mary of the Angels Catholic Church in Mt. Olive SC. We went at 9am Sunday and then got groceries at the Walmart in Mt. Olive. We checked out Cliffs of the Neuse State Park while we were there. It was only about 5 miles from our campground. We walked around and saw the Neuse River along with the cliffs. We walked over to Mae’s Restaurant for lunch on Tuesday (22 Sep). This is the only restaurant in Seven Springs. They cook two proteins and four sides to choose from. We had a nice cafeteria style lunch for under $18 for both of us.
