On Monday 24 November 2025, we drove to Pahrump Nevada to stay at Pair-a-Dice SKP Park for a week.  We spent Thanksgiving there with other Escapees.  Our drive from Lone Pine California to Pahrump Nevada was through Death Valley National Park for much of the trip, so we stopped inside the park to have our lunch.

Sunset the day we arrived in Pahrump...

Tuesday 25 November, we had a couple of repairs to take care of and with the grace of God and YouTube videos we managed to do the repairs ourselves for only $4.23.  I should say Steve fixed everything.  We learned on YouTube to check the fuse in our microwave that had died a few days before.  It turned out that replacing the fuse fixed it right up.  Much better than buying a new microwave!  Our self-leveling had malfunctioned when we arrived on Monday, so we had manually leveled our rig for the night and then dealt with it that morning.  Again, YouTube showed how to reset it using the app on your phone.  Steve had the app and was able to reset the auto level system and auto level our rig.  We were excited to get these things fixed without a major purchase or having to bring our rig in for a repair or replacement. Since half the day was taken with these repairs, we hung around the campground and got laundry done that day to free up the rest of the week for site-seeing.

Wednesday 26 November, we drove about 55 miles to see Death Valley National Park from the East Entrance.  We had a beautiful day for our travels.  Our first destination inside the park was Dante’s View.  That was absolutely beautiful!  We hiked out to one of the peaks and were just awed by the massiveness and other worldly views.  Anita was curious about who Dante was. According to AI's response to the question about who Dante's View is named after, "Dante's View is named after Dante Alighieri, the 14th-century Italian poet famous for writing the Divine Comedy. The name was given to the overlook in 1926 by a businessman from the Pacific Coast Borax Company, who felt the spectacular view was worthy of a name from a great literary work".

Next, we drove to Zabriskie Point and did another short hike.  This is the back side of Golden Canyon which we had seen and hiked a few days ago.  We then drove to the 20 Mule Team Canyon, but the road to that trailhead was closed.  We decided to do the Harmony Borax Works site, which is a ¼ mile paved walk around old equipment.  Steve wanted to find a hot spring for a soak.  He found one in Tecopa Hot Springs.  He enjoyed a soak for about an hour.  Our last destination for the day was China Ranch Date Farm which was supposed to be about 2 miles from the Tecopa Hot Springs, but it took us a few minutes to find a most circuitous path to the China Ranch.  The last mile before reaching the ranch is narrow and windy through a canyon.  Once there we were amazed that there are many hiking trails right from the parking lot, but it was about 45 minutes before sunset by the time we arrived, so we opted to have one of their famous date shakes and head home.

Road out of China Ranch Date Farm

Thanksgiving day was one of cooking and eating.  The Escapee park where we were staying had a potluck at 3pm that afternoon.  We made cornbread dressing and green bean casserole to bring.  The park provided turkey and ham, and there were about 70 people there, so about that many dishes to choose from.  Needless to say, we ate too much but we enjoyed the fellowship of being with other RV travelers.  We sat with a couple (Art and Jan} who have a house in Pennsylvania, but travel about 6 months of the year.  It was fun sharing stories of being on the road and the interesting places we’ve seen.

Friday 28 November we drove out to see Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Amargosa Valley.  Earlier in the week we had stopped road-side to have our lunch in Death Valley Junction.  There was a semi tractor trailer parked there too.  We had parked in front of him and when he pulled out as he was passing us, he stopped beside our truck to say he noticed our Texas plates and that we should see Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge.  He called it the 8th wonder of the world.   Part of the refuge is inside Death Valley National Park and the roads were all dirt/gravel, so a slow drive.  We first went to Devil’s Hole in hopes of seeing the Pupfish which are on the edge of extinction and live only in this refuge.  At the higher view Devil’s Hole we could feel the heat from the 92-degree water below.  We couldn’t see the pupfish with the lighting or lack thereof.  The sun wasn’t at the right angle to illuminate down to the water below.  We had done the short hike up to that Devil's Hole 2 and we were glad we did after feeling the heat from the water.  It’s amazing that these little 2-inch pupfish live in that!

Next we went to the Ash Meadows Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center.  We watched a short film about the area and walked through the center to see the exhibits.  In the 1980’s a developer wanted to build a 25,000-lot community where the refuge is now.  Hundreds of desert species call the refuge home, so it’s nice that the big community wasn’t built.  We had our lunch in the truck under the roof where we were parked and then walked out on the boardwalk to Crystal Spring.  Virtually all of the water at Ash Meadows is fossil water, believed to have entered the ground water system tens of thousands of years ago.  Our last point of interest in Ash Meadows Wildlife Refuge was Point of Rocks.  This site also has a boardwalk leading to natural springs and it was here that we finally spotted the pupfish.  They are so small and their color blends in with the water and rocks, so we were lucky to see them.  They got their name from their playful nature and we saw that playfulness.  They are fun to watch!  We had to grocery shop on our way home, so we opted to leave the refuge after Point of Rocks.  There are so few hours of daylight this time of year that we wanted to get home before dark, if possible, with grocery shopping.  We made it with almost an hour to spare.

Saturday 29 November, we were both sort of tired of all the driving to see sites, so we decided to stay around the campground.  The weather has been sunny and warm since we arrived at Pahrump and the campground is large enough to walk a couple of miles if we walk up and down each row.  So we went for a walk and then relaxed for the afternoon till mass at 5pm.  We attended mass at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in Pahrump.  It was only about 3.5 miles from our campground, so that was nice, especially since it was dark by the time mass was over.

Our week at Pair-a-Dice Escapee Park has flown by! The people here have been very nice and welcoming. Our last social activity here was an ice cream social this afternoon. It was fun hearing stories from fellow RVers. A couple of the women at our table are solo RVers and it was especially intriguing to hear their stories and the hurdles they've overcome.

Tomorrow we're heading to Lake Havasu City Arizona for three nights on our way to Yuma Arizona where we'll be staying for about 3 months.
