Heritage RV Park - Homer Spit Alaska Sunrise

We drove about 330 miles back to Homer Spit on Saturday 23 Aug 2025.  We both commented that it felt good to be back there.  Surrounded by water and snow capped mountains and sunshine, we were in our happy place.  Sunday we went to mass at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Homer at 11am.  After mass they invited everyone for a social in the parish hall.  A lady walking out with us encouraged us to go, so we followed her down.  There were pastries and coffee, but the highlight was talking with Janet and Chuck.  Janet is the lady who encouraged us to go to the social.  They spend their winters in Texas, close to where we are domiciled.  We exchanged contact info and we’ll likely call them when we’re in Texas next Spring.  They’ve both had knee replacements and they recommended a doctor (Fackler) at Houston Methodist for Steve to consult.  After church, we picked up our 42 pounds of fish in storage at Homer Fish Processing.  We paid for the processing that day, but they actually didn’t charge us for storing our fish.  We were pleasantly surprised by that.  We put all the fish in our new freezer, so it’s officially a new way of living with a working freezer in one of our walkways and needing to have power where ever we park.

That afternoon we walked over to see the charter boats’ catch.  On our walk, we found it to be winding down for the season in Homer Spit.  There were hardly any anglers fishing in “the hole’, but 3 weeks ago fishermen were shoulder to shoulder.

On Monday (18th) we drove about 20 miles to Anchor Point Alaska for Steve to fish for Dolly Varden and for Anita to have Internet to catch up on the blog.  We also went to the Norman Lowell Art Gallery.  Janet and Chuck from the social after church last Sunday had mentioned that it’s worth seeing.  It turns out Norman Lowell was from Iowa, so it was nice to learn about him and see all his work.

Steve finally caught a couple of Dolly Varden at the very last place he tried.  Perseverance paid off!  Now with catching those and the Arctic grayling last week Steve’s crossed off bucket list fish he wanted to catch. That evening we went out to eat to celebrate our 8 year wedding anniversary!  We opted for a Mexican restaurant we had gone to with Brent and Shannon a few weeks ago.  We had a nice evening and relaxed at home after dinner.  Steve woke up around 2am that night to check to see if we could see Northern lights, but there was too much light in the campground and maybe too many clouds too.  We talked about looking for the Aurora Borealis in the Yukon when we go through there on our way back to the lower 48.  It’s really dark there as long as we hit a new moon phase.
