Start of the Alaska Highway (Hwy 97) 28 May 2025
So from Wes and Faye’s on 28 May we drove to Dawson Creek British Columbia. We gained an hour in the time change shortly before arriving (Pacific time) so it was nice to have most of the afternoon to catch up on needed rest and relaxation. We stayed at Northern Lights RV Resort. We did go out briefly to get fueled up for our drive the next day, but we enjoyed early showers and just relaxing before an early bedtime. With towing 300 miles per day for several days straight, it starts to get tiring. Steve is better at staying awake (which is good because he’s driving), but Anita gets sleepy after lunch. We tried to get to bed early for 6am wake-ups.
We had made a reservation in Tok Alaska for June 2nd, but on travel days we just pulled into RV parks and got one night’s stay, except for Banff where we had a reservation for 2 nights. It was freeing to travel this way. We could drive further if we felt like it, or stop earlier if needed. We hadn’t had any problem getting a campsite. We had purchased the Milepost book recommended for driving to Alaska and it lists a few campgrounds along the way.
29 May 2025 we drove from Dawson Creek BC to Fort Nelson BC on the Alaska/Canada (ALCAN) Hwy or Hwy 97. We saw a wild horse and a black bear on the driver side of the road, but couldn’t get a picture in time. We also saw a large deer in the middle of a city road laying there looking at traffic. It wasn’t laying on its side, but looked still and alert. It had been hit by a vehicle and couldn’t walk away.

30 May 2025 we drove from Fort Nelson BC to Watson Lake Yukon. We stayed at the Downtown RV Park for the night and went out briefly to get fuel for our next day’s drive and to see Watson Lake’s Sign Post Forest. We also went in the Northern Lights Centre which is right across the highway from the Sign Post Forest. We got some information on when to see the Northern Lights. They are best seen between midnight and 3am, but that just won’t work for us till we’re settled for a couple of weeks at a time in Alaska. During this 9-day drive to Alaska, we need our sleep too much to be awake from midnight to 3am. We’re more likely to see them in September or October. We’ll stay till September if the snow doesn’t push us out. The drive between Fort Nelson and Watson Lake was breathtakingly beyond words. We commented that it’s probably the most beautiful drive we’ve ever taken. It’s the continuous beauty that does it. We’ve seen patches of awesome views on drives, but today was just 284 miles of continuous awesome! The Milepost book we’ve been using said to stop for the best cinnamon bun you’ll ever have, so we did. We had also heard about this place from other RV’ers who have taken this route. The cinnamon buns were the absolute best we’ve ever had! They are home-made and just wonderful through and through. We met a nice couple there from Vancouver Island. We spoke with Carol and Michael for about a half hour before leaving. They passed us on the road later and waved through their sunroof. Our next stop was the Liard Hot Springs. We had also read about this in the Milepost, but have heard from many that it’s a must stop. We saw the hot spring pool and Steve even stuck his feet in for a few minutes, but we needed to continue our trek to Watson Lake. We got our walk in with the boardwalk to the hot springs and to see the hanging garden. It’s always nice to stretch the legs after being in the truck for a couple of hours. We saw lots of wildlife today too. We lost count of black bears after 9 adults and 3 cubs. Steve also saw a couple of dead moose, and we both saw a dead little bear cub. We also saw one cinnamon colored black bear cub. It was really cute. We also saw lots of bison. In Canada they’re Wood Bison. There were many babies in the herd.

31 May 2025 we drove on Alaska Hwy 1 from Watson Lake to Whitehorse and stayed the night at Pioneer RV Park. It was Saturday so we looked up a local mass and found that Whitehorse has a Cathedral. We attended mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral and then we went to dinner at a restaurant recommended by locals from church. G&P is a small restaurant that we learned requires reservations. We didn’t have a reservation, so they offered us seats at the bar. That worked out well and we really enjoyed our meals. The drive on Alaska Hwy 1 was OK, but worse than Hwy 97 up to Watson Lake. We did see one black bear this morning in the first half hour of our drive, but mostly we watched for the “bump” signs and slowed way down for the bumps. The worst “bump” was about an 8-inch drop from the paved road onto gravel. There was no additional warning so we slowed down like for the other hardly noticeable bumps. We had no damage from the drop. The last two days of driving to get to Tok Alaska are supposed to be the worst of the trip, so we’re planning long days of slow driving for the last two days.

2 June 2025 we drove to Tok Alaska! It took us 6 hours to drive 145 miles. That was OK as we arrived in Alaska with no broken windshields or anything else broken on our truck or fifth wheel. We stayed at Tok RV Village and they actually offer a windshield repair place that it's such a common problem. We had 11 days worth of laundry to do, so we got that done the day we arrived at Tok. We tried to visit the Tok Visitor’s Center after laundry, but they closed at 4pm.
